Gifted?

My friend just sent me this link regarding "gifted preschoolers." Although I don't like labels like this, I found the information on this site to be very thought-provoking. It's basically a mom sharing her attempts to facilitate the education of her "gifted child." Of particular note are her descriptions of "netting" for other gifted peers, "networking" to form play groups, and ideas for "intellectual stimulation."

She did address one of the previous fears I mentioned in a prior blog about how Arianna prefers sedentary tasks and how I was worried about that. As a toddler, her developing activity right now should be gross and some fine motor skills, rather than reading, pretend play with her dollhouse and blocks, and drawing. We got a membership to the Strong Museum so she can have a place to run around and explore, especially during the long winter months.

I have never really thought of Arianna as gifted, even though she has always had a long attention span and seems to remember everything and make connections quickly. I have just always thought of her as my special little girl, who seems content enough to develop at her own pace. I want her to know that I love and accept her no matter what. I think the best way to show that to a toddler (or anyone, really) is to spend as much time together, enjoying each other's company, as much as possible. Just something to keep in mind as you read the article!

Happy Holidays!
Rebecca
