Week 16

Baby #2 passed its first test with flying colors. The Nuchal Translucency (NT) combines information from the mother's age, a blood test with information from an ultrasound to determine the baby's chances of genetic defects, such as Down's Syndrome and Trisomy-5. We also tested for Cystic Fibrosis on the blood test. Although not a 100% guarantee, our risks are extremely low on all counts.

We chose to have the NT done as opposed to the Chorionic Villi Sampling (spelling?) or Amniocentesis because it was non-invasive and posed no risk to the baby. If our risk was shown to be worse than the average, we would have to choose whether to get more conclusive testing done with either the CVS (if it was still early enough) or the amniocentesis. Luckily, we don't think we need to go that route. Baby seems healthy and quite active! What a relief.

On the homefront, we had a lovely visit with Mema, Arianna's paternal grandmother. She flew up from Florida to spend Thanksgiving week with us and we took great pleasure in spoiling Mema with her favorite culinary delights as well as treating her to some new ones. Mema and Arianna got along famously and spent hours playing with Play-Doh, crafts, books, and trains. We were sad to see her go.

This week, our new house in the city seems to be coming together at last. The kitchen is finished, except for a few spots to paint, the new windows are in, and Andrew just moved a pick-up truck full of our furniture over there. We hope the bathroom and all the loose ends will be finished by Friday so we can move over the weekend. If you have a strong back and are available, come on down -- the more the merrier!

I have designed some new light-block curtains/roman shades for the master bedroom. If the installation goes well, the other bedrooms will get the same treatment. Blocking out the morning light was CRITICAL in getting Arianna to sleep late during those bright summer days, so I created these curtains with her in mind.

I can't post pictures on blogger, but I can on Arianna's WordPress blog. I'll put up some before and after pics of the house as well as the new curtains.

I'm also thinking about creating a book of my favorite dinner recipes, with a shopping list included. I have enjoyed Saving Dinner, but have outgrown it and prefer menus with more of an international flair with meat being optional. That'll be a good project for the New year!

I just recently joined Healthy Menu Mailer and they provide more variety than Saving Dinner. It's run by two great work at home moms!

Well, that's it for November!

A Simple Grape Juice Recipe To Try

One of my friends, Sandy, sent me this homemade grape juice recipe and I absolutely love it. I made one small change to it and now Arianna can't get enough of it. I have to limit her to one glass because as my friend wisely warned, "8 ounces a day will keep you regular; 16 ounces a day will keep you HOME!"

We are lucky enough to have some concord grapes that grow nearby, so we just pick a bagful as soon as the grapes are ripe.
  1. Rinse and clean the grapes.
  2. Put the grapes (stems and all) into a vegetable steamer tray and place inside a pot.
  3. Add 1 cup of water to the bottom of the pot. Put a tight-fitting lid on the pot.
  4. Cook on High until the water starts to boil, maybe 3 minutes.
  5. Simmer on Very Low for 30 minutes.
  6. Take a flat spatula and smoosh the rest of the juice from the wrinkled grapes, letting it drain into the bottom of the pot.
  7. Toss the stems and spent grapes from the top of the steamer and keep the juice from the bottom of the pan.
  8. You can drink it straight, or add up to 50% water to taste OR do what I do and add some honey while it's still hot.
  9. I pour the sweetened juice into a pitcher and keep it in the fridge.
  10. You can also freeze it or put it into canning jars and can it for winter use.
Easy, Nutritious, Delicious (and FREE, in our case) -- What's not to love?

Enjoy,
Rebecca

12 week check-up

We went to Strong Hospital for baby #2's first ultrasound. Only coming in at 6 cm, this little bundle of energy was amazing to watch. It would arch it's back and bounce off of the amnion, fly over to the other side and then do it all over again as soon as it landed. (This baby is treating my uterus like its own personal trampoline!) It kicked its legs, tried to suck its thumb, and waved hello. Quite a character. Perhaps a "bouncing" baby boy?

Still too early to tell, but Andrew and I are a little worried. Arianna wasn't THAT active at this age! We haven't received the results from the nuchal translucency test, but the sonographer said everything looked okay from her end. Baby moved around so much that sonographer #1 gave up and sent in sonographer #2, who had better luck, but we were still at the hospital from 10:30 - 2:00 with all of the waiting and tests.

We went to 3 different places for a combined wait of one hour! I have to say it was worth it though. Everyone was very nice and very knowledgeable. My blood test didn't even hurt (I did request a butterfly, though). I'm still tired from all of the running around.

When Arianna and I came home, my second birthday present was waiting on the front steps. But I'll write more about that later!
